Defining the Standard for a New Document

This task shows you how to set the standard you need for tolerancing your CATPart or CATProduct for a new document.
You must choose a standard before creating the first annotation in a document. See also Standards.
  1. Select the Tools > Options command.
The Options dialog box is displayed.

  2. Click Mechanical Design then Functional Tolerancing and Annotation in the left-hand column.

  3. Select the Tolerancing tab.

The Default standard at creation option provides eleven conventional standards:
    • ANSI (American National Standards Institute)
    • ASME (American Society for Mechanical Engineers)
    • ASME 3D (American Society for Mechanical Engineers)
    • ISO (International Organization for Standardization)
    • ISO 3D (International Organization for Standardization)
    • ISO 3D DS (International Organization for Standardization)
    • JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard)
    • JIS 3D (Japanese Industrial Standard)
    • JIS 3D DS (Japanese Industrial Standard)

See Tolerancing setting for further detail.

    • The standards which are suffixed with _3D (such as JIS_3D, JIS_3D_DS,ISO_3D or ISO_3D_DS) are specifically intended for 3D workbenches (3D Functional Tolerancing & Annotation as well as for the 2D Layout for 3D Design workbench).
In the XXX_3D_DS standards the font has been customized to represent the annotations that follow the ISO 3098 norms defining text representation.
    • For 3D Functional Tolerancing & Annotation, we recommend that you customize these specific xxx_3D standards, or that you create your own standards based on these specific standards.
    • The other standards JIS, ISO and ANSI are specifically intended for Drafting.
  4. Click OK to validate and close the dialog box.

Note that this choice of standard must be expressed prior to specifying any tolerance.
After any creation in the workbench, the standard may be modified but the corresponding syntax and semantic variation will not be taken into consideration.
  • The standards are provided with the application in .xml files. When you add or change the standard in a document, the standard information is provided by this dedicated XML standard file.
  • Once the standard is created it is imbedded in the CATPart or CATProduct document.
  • The standard defined in a CATPart document with Functional Tolerancing and Annotation will be reused when opening the same document in 2D Layout for 3D Design.
